We all need support when our working life throws challenges at us and, let’s face it, whilst the role of a teacher can be very rewarding it can also be challenging as well.
Throw into this mix our own personal situations and suddenly we find ourselves feeling overwhelmed, disillusioned and stuck. We start to lose perspective on situations and take things too personally. This has an impact on our stress levels, our ability to get a good night’s sleep and to be at our most productive and effective.
Often we find our work/life balance is so out of alignment that our relationships are affected and the strain this brings just adds to our stress and anxiety. We try to do the best for our students and our family and often our own needs go to the bottom of the pile. This is when our mental health can be seriously affected and then we need to take time off to recover.
This is borne out by an article in the Lancashire Evening Post which states “Data for the 2022/23 school year, recently released by the government, has revealed that more than 66% of the country’s 468,000 full time equivalent teachers took time off for health reasons throughout the year – an average of 8 days each”.
The NEU say “the profession is in the middle of a seemingly permanent recruitment and retention crisis”. The government’s workforce census showed 44,022 new teachers entered the workforce last year – 3,900 fewer than the year before – but 43,522 left it.
These statistics are obviously very concerning and show a real need for additional support for everyone who is still in the teaching profession doing their best to maintain a decent level of professionalism in the workplace.
